International Cat Day

“Having a bunch of cats around is good. If you're feeling bad, you just look at the cats, you'll feel better because they know that everything is just as it is. There's nothing to get excited about. They just know. They're saviors.” - Charles Bukowski

Obviously the star of our upcoming show here at Fascination St. Fine Art and Frame, Nano Lopez, has to agree. The cats you see here are just a few of the many cats Nano has sculpted to life throughout his career in his internationally acclaimed series of animal works lovingly called “Nanimals”.

“Cats are difficult to find the anatomy...unless it’s a wet, skinny kind of naked cat, but they’re not that pretty,” said Lopez at an event through another one of his galleries. This challenge may be the key to why cats are a frequent subject within the Nanimals collection. Their personalities vary too, from the expectant Lucy to the pensive and thoughtful Edison, and on up to Catfish Lily stretching out her long back, eagerly reaching towards the gear in front of her. Sally seems content with her gentle smile and posture whereas Jack seems to have just woken up from a long nap with that arched back stretch of his.

You can come check out ALL the Nanimal cats, as well as their other critter friends and Mr. Lopez himself at our Nano Lopez event August 24th and 25th here at Fascination St. Fine Art and Frame! The magic of these sculptures will capture and transport you to a place of creative curiosity, ornate details, and beautiful color amongst creatures both familiar and strange.

But before we go...in the spirit of International Cat Day, here are some random facts about our feline compadres, and links to reputable charities that dedicate their funds and efforts to the rescue of, and the rights of cats everywhere.

FELINE FACTS
Collectively, kittens yawn about 200 million time per hour. A fingerprint is to a human as a nose is to a cat. Cats can pick up on your tone of voice, so sweet-talking to your cat has more of an impact than you think. Cats have over 100 sounds in their vocal repertoire, while dogs only have 10. Cats sleep 16 hours of any given day. A cat can reach up to five times its own height per jump. Cats have the skillset that makes them able to learn how to use a toilet. Cats CAN be lefties and righties, just like us. More than forty percent of them are, leaving some ambidextrous. Genetically, cats' brains are more similar to that of a human than a dog's brain. Today, cats are living twice as long as they did just 50 years ago. Cats have the cognitive ability to sense a human's feelings and overall mood. A female cat is also known to be called a "queen" or a "molly." Call them wide-eyes: cats are the mammals with the largest eyes.
